Eddie the Eagle Rumor

At the end of last year the rumor came out that Rupert is going to play Eddie the Eagle. We know he was sent the script and supposedly met with the director, but that doesn't mean it's a done deal! It's still firmly in the rumor category.

And If you don't know who Eddie the Eagle is...

Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards, was the first competitor to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping and was the British ski jumping record holder.

There's been a lot of revived interest in Eddie lately, so I thought I'd open this thread so we can talk about the film, Eddie, and Rupert's potential involvement!

For starters, Eddie the Eagle is going back to Canada and will be carrying the Olympic torch on the 7th for this year's winter games! Press Release

Hey guys, here's an update on the film production-wise. Keep in mind Rupert is still not confirmed!

A report in the U.K.'s Sunday Mirror in November suggested filming was set to begin in December 2009 with Harry Potter's Rupert Grint in the lead role. But Calgary film commissioner Luke Azevedo says nothing concrete has been planned for the near future and cameras aren't likely to start rolling any time soon.

"We haven't seen anything new, as of yet," he said. "From the location scouting perspective, there have been things that we have been following up on, but there hasn't been any new news from the financing perspective, which is really going to drive the agenda."

Grint will reportedly replace British comedian Steve Coogan, who was attached to the role for years. But conflicting casting news has always swirled around the production. In 2007, U.K.'s Guardian newspaper interviewed Edwards in Cotswold, where he discussed the various actors who had been attached to the film.

Oh, and did we mention the movie?

The biopic on his life is due to start filming later this year, with Rupert Grint— known for his work in the Harry Potter films — playing Eddie.

The real Eddie has a couple of other preferences.

"Brad Pitt. Or Tom Cruise."

But can any of them ski jump?

Noting again that Rupert isn't confirmed (because that's what we do!), here's a little something I was thinking about the film while sitting on my butt watching the Olympics yesterday..

So say hypothetically that Rupert takes the role and BAM! Before we know it, the film is on it's way to theaters.

Considering it's an Olympic tale at heart, the film's release would probably fair better around the time of the Winter Olympics. Unless they plan on waiting to release the film in 2014, which I seriously doubt, that window of opportunity just shattered.

I'm not saying that the film would FAIL, I don't think it would at all, but it probably won't get the same type of hype.

Yeah, you bring up a good point, Kait. Marketing wise, it'd be great to release the film during the winter Olympics. I know this film's been in the works for quite some time now, so maybe the original plan was to release it in 2010 for these Olympic games? Hmmm It'll be interesting to see how this all pans out...

I too have a feeling it was probably intended to coincide with the Winter Olympics.

I think, assuming they do make it and Rupert takes the role, they will probably release it close to the 2014 games. I figure the scenario would probably be that filming would begin maybe after the end of Rupert's promo obligations for the final DH (not to mention with this long shoot he's been on, he'd probably want to take a break before jumping into another project).

If it went like that, filming would begin late summer/fall of 2011 at the earliest. He might even have to do some training or something before, so maybe even late 2011. So let's say filming and post-production takes the better part of a year, that puts the film finished at late 2012. So they would probably release it sometime 2013, most likely the later half, and they can start tying promotions in to the upcoming Olympics that same winter.

The sucky thing for us as Rupert fans is that sounds soooooo far away. :wince:

That's definitely a possibility, Soph! Although like you said, it sounds so far away....
